COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The overhead thrower’s course is presented for physical therapists interested in managing the overhead athlete. Baseball and softball players are unique athletes and require special characteristics to allow them the mobility and stability to perform their sport. There are considerable anatomical and biomechanical kinetic chain concepts that the physical therapist must understand to treat these athletes appropriately.

TEACHING METHODS / LEARNING EXPERIENCE:
This course will include lecture, case study presentations, audio-visual presentations, demonstration on a model, lab time for practice of skills, course handout, and directed self-study and resource materials. Typically, the lab component will be 50% of the contact hours. The student to instructor ratio will meet NAIOMT standards.

COURSE GENERAL OBJECTIVES:
The course participant will review the components of the shoulder girdle that result in normal shoulder girdle function as it relates to the overhead athlete. Participants will be able to evaluate, recognize, and treat common conditions related to overhead athletes. Participants will have a better understanding of the key components for treatment and will be able to clinically integrate a streamlined evaluation process to be more successful in their market place.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Overhead athletes require special characteristics to allow them the mobility and stability to perform their sport. There are considerable anatomical and biomechanical kinetic chain concepts that professionals must understand to treat these athletes appropriately. The normal upper quarter function is dependent on controlled and sequenced motion of all its component parts. Additionally, in overhead sports, coordination from the lower quarter plays a major role in setting up the upper quarter to perform properly.  You will learn anatomical and biomechanical considerations of the entire kinetic chain in detail, along with extensive lab time for mastering evaluation and treatment skills. All overhead sports will be touch on and subtle difference reviewed.  Video analysis, breakdown of the pitcher’s mechanics, and live demonstration of an overhead athlete evaluation will be incorporated into this course.

This course is focused on enhancing the physical therapists’ ability to make decisions about clinical presentations that may indicate serious pathology in the lumbopelvic region. Course participants will develop a safe, effective, and efficient lumbopelvic screening examination that has three (3) primary aims; a) to ensure that the patient/client is within the scope of physical therapy practice and suitable for management, b) to provide a provisional diagnosis, and c) to guide the remainder of the evaluation and management. Course participants will identify an all-source evidence-informed approach to evaluation and management through consideration of normal, abnormal and applied lumbopelvic anatomy, physiology, pathology, and movement science. Course participants will apply the concepts of total patient health, function, life-participation, pain behaviors and their manifestations, and their role in the total patient/client management. Management strategies will include education, activity modification, manual therapy techniques, and individualized neuromuscular rehabilitation prescription, with the goal of restoring optimal function and preventing future health conditions and impairments.
